My Husband and I hiked up to alpine lakes in the Tobacco Root mountains using this book as a guide and found it very accurate and helpful, both in helping us decide where to go, and then as a guide so we didn't get lost. At least where we went, his descriptions of what we would find, were right on. If he said we would find small brookies, that is what we caught, if he said we might catch larger cuts, that is what we found. The author not only gives you the information he has, but he also tells you when his information if limited or based on only a few trips at certain times, so you know when to make your own judgements.The authors writing style is easy to read and it was fun to read through the entire book - it gave us lots of ideas for our next trip. Pros: Some nice features and I am glad the author took the time to put it together. They actually went to some of the locations rather than just using second hand research and information. (although far too much of the later)Cons: Much of the information used is readily available for free from Montana FWP. Much of that information is terribly dated. Some of the lakes listed as fishless do, in fact, contain fish. I know this from first hand experience not googling. The author relies too much on "locals tell us". I live in the middle of SW Montana in a flyfishing "mecca" and the locals will certainly tell you stories about this or anything else you will listen to. Just go to the bars. Reliable information-no. No one here in their right mind is going to offer up their secret locales so a horde from Bozeman can descend. You keep it to yourself.Summary- decent. A fun way to spend some time in the winter. Not unhappy I bought it although the paperback price is not worth it. Get the kindle version. You can get the same results with a topo map, some research and a little physical effort. No secrets here, go high, go remote.
