This book gives you a first hand fly on the wall view of these ships and the life onboard for the merchant mariners who run them.We learn the ships involved in international commerce do not run by magic. Everything is finely tuned to get products from one port to another. They are staffed by a Captain and his or her team of seamen and engineers that make it all happen, real people who live a life largely at sea. And the ship is supported by tug boat crews and pilots and portside suppliers of ships stores. The author took a month long trip aboard a cargo ship to experience life aboard and to see the ship industry from the inside. His book provides a reality show without the sex, foul language or faked disagreements of the TV variety. And he includes just enough nautical explanations for land-lubbers to get an idea of how things work and what’s involved in daily life at sea. This is a must read for people like me who love to take cruises and wish to know more about those large silent non-cruise ships they observe at sea or in ports.It only takes a few “supply chain” disruptions to make one aware of how important these seafaring men and women are to the products we seek in our big box, hardware and grocery stores, or the home delivery we now expect from Amazon, etc.I’m hoping Mr. Mallette next will bring his observational talents to our US ports, many of which are eons behind those in Mexico and the Far East. I also love to travel, and to sail…albeit in much more comfort than Mallette experienced aboard the Cap Tapaga. Having never entertained the thought of boarding a Cargo vessel, after this ‘read’, I just might! Thoroughly enlightening, entertaining and written in a manner that brought the entirety of the author’s experience alive for me.
